"What makes Jon & Alfie stand out from the pack is not only their understanding of the tradition, but their subtle questioning of folk music idiom." ~ Stephen Witkowski (Bright Young Folk)
Jon Dyer and Alfie Gidley are a Southwest guitar and flute duo. Since meeting at Falmouth University in 2010, they have gone on to perform at major UK folk festivals and release their debut album, ‘Level Pegging’ - 'An exceptional album of intelligent trad and original arrangements' - fRoots Magazine.
Jon and Alfie's skillful musicianship and tight synchronicity lends an exciting edge to the traditional and self-penned folk tunes they play.
"Besides the folk tradition, the listener can also detect influences from jazz and world music which adds a touch of spice."Stephen Witkowski
While Alfie deftly navigates the fingerboard, drawing on the Doyle/Edey schools of drop D guitar playing, Jon’s mischievous embellishments land firmly in the footsteps of Sheelanagig’s Adrian Sykes. These two styles create a multi-layered and cohesive sound, producing rich and sometimes surprising textures from the instruments. Their performance is full of masterful and unexpected twists, delivered with infectious good humour and dazzling multi-instrumentalism.
